Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. When she was a girl, Ford was battling obsessive/compulsive disorders and anxiety caused through word-related associations. Ford started acting in her teens, and was a member of the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted into Sylvia Young Theatre School but after just one week she realized that she didn't fit in. Ford decided to apply for the Central School of Speech and Drama and was able to secure a place on her fourth application. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler, a regular character in Doctor Who. Ford's debut on TV was a 1991 episode Surgical Spirit. By the when she finished her studies, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate was a part of such programs on television as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London Burning. Apart from her regular stage work, Tate was a part of in the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate's stand-up comedy style that she started adding to her set in the year 1996, was soon gaining her attention.
